What Determines a Scrap Car’s Value?
Unlike selling a second-hand car privately, scrap value is calculated differently. There are several key factors that every scrap dealer — including us — uses to calculate your price.
1. The Weight of Your Vehicle
This is the biggest factor. Scrap cars are valued primarily by weight, because they are melted down for their steel and other metals. A heavier car means more metal, which means a higher payout. Large SUVs, 4x4s and vans will always fetch more than small hatchbacks.
2. Current Scrap Metal Prices
Scrap metal prices — especially steel — fluctuate weekly based on global commodity markets. When steel prices are high, scrap car values go up. When they dip, so does your payout. Always get a quote on the day you’re ready to sell for the most accurate figure.
3. Make, Model and Age
Some cars contain more valuable metals like aluminium, copper or even precious metals in catalytic converters. Older diesel cars often have catalytic converters that are worth more due to their platinum content. Certain makes — particularly larger German or Japanese cars — can yield higher scrap returns.
4. Working Parts and Salvage Value
If your car has working parts — a good engine, functioning gearbox, undamaged doors or interior — a reputable scrapper may offer a salvage price rather than pure scrap. This is often higher, as the parts can be resold before the shell is crushed.

How to Get the Best Price for Your Scrap Car
Getting a fair price isn’t just about luck — there are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you maximise your payout.
- Get your quote on the day you want to sell — prices change, so a quote from last month may be higher or lower than today’s rate.
- Mention any working parts — a functioning engine, good tyres or undamaged bodywork could push you into salvage pricing.
- Don’t drain the fuel — some scrappers will offer a small premium for fuel left in the tank.
- Remove personal belongings — anything left in the car stays with the car once it’s collected.
- Have your V5C ready if possible — while not always essential, it can speed up the process and some dealers prefer it.
